Potato Gratin

1 pound potatoes, waxy variety -- peeled
1 clove garlic
8 fluid ounces double cream
1 ounce butter
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 200oC
Slice the potatoes as thinly as possible, on mandoline if available.
Cut garlic clove in two and rub round the inside of a shallow baking dish. Layer the potatoes in the dish seasoning lightly between the layers.
Bring cream to the boil in a pan and pour over the potatoes.
Put dots of butter over the top of the dish and bake for about 45 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top golden brown.
